BMW build some of the most aggressively ugly bikes on the planet - those lop-eyed supermotard thingies that look like the result of a night on the turps between Bill the Cat and a spoonbill heron springs to mind - but with those tassels on the seat, it HAS to be something designed to arrive on at Das VyMCA..

I would like to reserve judgment on an "unusual bike" for when I, either ride it, or see it being ridden.

If a bike is going to make a visual statement, it needs to back it up with physics bending performance. Being able to go (and stop, and turn) like stink is what attracted me to bikes in the first place. If the bimmer in question is going to have eff-U looks, a black asphalt stripe needs to follow it's departure and it better sound like something is being tortured inside the engine. This can not exist if it is a paces a moped. The posh bits like the radial brakes don't hurt either. The only "got to go" is the "hair" coming off of the back of the seat,, If I saw it parked on the street, I might be compelled to do the owner a favor with some clippers,, ;) ,, and the chrome pipes need to be replaced to,,,

with those two changes I'm leaning towards "like"
.
. ,,alpha males don't do second place, there are storm clouds forming over at team blue
. * * *DP WC in 2013* * *
. ,,what happens without the mechanical advantage

I'm leaning towards the like also...
Till...
I look at the seat.
Till...
I look at the headlight cluster (F**k).
Till...
I summize the total cost.

But there is something 'likeable' about it.

The seat height is considerably lower than a stock bike, perhaps it belongs to our long silenced friend Lucy?

There are a couple of these bikes at the National Motorcycle Musuem in Nabiac NSW (Aus). Saw them a couple of years ago on a trip down the coast. Don't see them around at all really. I took some video of the ones in the museum when I was there. They are at about 1:34

There was 2 of these (Ducati Desmosedici rr's) on a ride day i did at eastern creek recently. they sound unbelievable and completely different to anything else on track. Sort of like the engine is trying to rip itself apart. you cant help but look and grin. I've heard them at PI MotoGP weekend's but with all the other exotic bikes popping and roaring around the uniqueness of the sound is lost. At a standard track day they really are like a tiger amongst sheep.

You also cant help but feel smug overtaking both of them in the same lap on a 10year old gsxr750 :D they looked like a couple of rich blokes having a wobble around doing their best not to crash.

Saw one at the Eaglehawk petrol station on the ACT border the Christmas before last - with acute road rash (hole in the lh fairing, broken ductail, alternator cover ground open) - I'd reckon $10k damage at least... but it WAS beautiful, I wanted to adopt it and take it home and nurse it back to health.

That RE5 is in great shape phil. Pretty remarkable. That is another bike you just never see on the street.

But I was just struck by that pic of the RC30s. Again. I seriously could look at those things all day long. I'm pretty convinced they are the best looking bikes ever and all that is covering up what really makes them cool. Probably the only bike I'd ever keep all the plastic bits on if I owned one.

My brother and I (he lives in LA, I'm in Spain) play this game where he sends me progressively larger pictures of a bike, starting with very small detail shots, to see how soon I can guess what it is; sort of like what Alex Briggs does on twitter. These are the shots that he sent recently.

I guessed (based on the angle of the instrument panel in the first shot; the following pix just confirmed it) it was some kind of steampunk-style custom Ducati based on a 749/999. Later, I saw a bike with a similar bracket on the fuel tank in an article by Mark Gardiner, and that led me to the bike itself on the Zero Engineering site. I remember seeing the really well done video about Shinya Kimura, so this all had a strange sense of having seen it before. I'm not a steampunk fan, it's all affectation as far as I'm concerned, but something about this bike is OK...

Well I didn't quite see any of these bike but though I'd share anyway. Not sure if anyone here has been to this place, but it looks very cool. Don't think this is a re-post, as I haven't seen it before.

I have been waiting for WSBK to start running at Barber to justify the 3000 mile ride out there.

Everyone I know who has been there has said the museum is the most incredible they have ever seen. Below the museum they have a restoration shop that employs a good number of people just prepping bike for the museum. And they have hundreds in storage that they can't even get to.

The track is also one of the best I have ever seen. If you can get a hold of an AMA race video from there, you'll see what I mean. It is definitely the best track in the US and this is coming from a serious Laguna Seca fan.

Surprising there aren't any international bike races there then. The facilities certainly look pretty good. Phillip Island has terrible facilities and is the best track in Australia. Go figure.

The problem is that it is a pretty short track. According to a tweet from Señor Noyes, it is 200m shorter than Jerez and it has like 17 turns.

In my mind 17 turns and a short track is real racing but apparently, my opinion doesn't matter.

Oh yeah, it should also be mentioned that all of the bikes in the museum have been run around the track and could be run at any time. At least that is the claim.

That layout of Barber is very reminiscent of a certain Aragon track. Obviously there are differences but the I like the elevation changes and the like

Ya just have to be careful of the wildlife around Barber Motorsports Park, they'll pick up anything, carry it off and try to have it for lunch.

Then again, it adds a whole new meaning to endurance racing ;)
