MotoTheory.com Google Earth - Help Needed

Postby RatsMC on Thu May 05, 2011 4:45 am

I just set up the Google Earth viewer on Mototheory and it looks and works really cool...in Internet Explorer.

In Firefox the whole thing seems to be a mess. The first issue is that it is stretching the page so you have to scroll to the right to see it and then it starts to load but fails after freezing the browser for a couple of minutes.

I need to make sure this isn't specific to my browser and laptop.

Can any of you go to http://www.mototheory.com/the-tracks/jerez and tell me what it is doing? What browser are you using? And OS?

I think the problem with the page stretching is a CSS issue but with my limited CSS skills I haven't been able to fix it.

Just checked this out and in Firefox 4 the Google Earth map is offset to the right, as though it is in the right hand column.
In IE 8 it is positioned correctly as it is in Chrome
I am using XP SP3

Do you have a div container around the actual map Rats to position it correctly? Google Maps and Google Earth embeds can sometimes be a bit tricky.

The div is actually around the whole center column. However, I think the issue is with the header since this same sort of issue was going on with the charts. I fixed that by fixing the header size (I didn't realize it was a problem since I was only looking at it in IE.

Of course, I'm just guessing since I don't know what the hell I am doing in CSS.

In Firefox, did the Google Earth plugin work properly aside from being offset to the right?

Yes, you could still use it as normal, even though you could only see half of it.

Dammit. I guess that is good except it means I have to figure out what is wrong with my browser.

I really need to learn CSS. This is a constant problem for me. The problem is that I just start to fall asleep any time I start to read anything about CSS

Don't read about it, just do it. It is actually pretty simple. Every website I work on now is pure CSS, I actually find it way better than trying to use tables for layout.

Yeah, but I don't even understand the fundamentals. It's really simple scripting but the basic structure isn't making sense.

I tend to learn things by doing them (I'm sure there is a description that type of learning), so I normally get some examples and play with then to see how they work. Then I apply this to whatever I am working on.

Try this ink. Download one of the layouts and view the code. It's just a html file and a css file. Really basic but the layouts helped me understand how CSS works as far as layout goes. HTH.

I think all coding or scripting is the same for me. I get it far faster when I'm modifying someone else's code than trying to learn from scratch.

Macbook Pro, with Firefox 4: It's kinda to the right, but I can see the whole thing if i scroll.

With Safari everything looks normal.
