What a Pass!

Postby Cam D on Sat Dec 10, 2011 6:09 am

Pretty quiet during the off season..... was wondering if anyone wanted to share memorable/favourite passes for viewing. I'll start with a couple.
Cadalora on Doohan around the outside at the Creeek

More recently Casey on Jorge @ Laguna

KS doing what he does

and of course....

Thanks.

That second Schwantz clip is insane. He looks totally out of control but doesn't even seem bothered by it.

I also noticed in watching that Stoner pass at Laguna Seca, that it doesn't look quite as terrifying when you just watch it as a pass. If you've seen that "straight" it become unfathomable how he could pull it off. being blind over that crest right at T1 requires absolute precision in knowing when to turn it in. And then once you've slammed it over, there is a fairly steep downhill run into T2 with very little time to slow yourself. Stoner managed to make the pass, avoid running into the wall and then brake in time to maintain the position through T2. I worked T2 in 2010 and it seriously felt like staring down the barrel of a cannon. I watched so many AMA riders screw up that corner coming in too hot not too mention the pace car that lost its brakes just after the crest and rocketed into the tire wall.

When Michael Scott says he's not sure Stoner has the mental strength, I can' t help but feel he has his head up his ass.

Anyway, any more clips anyone? I could watch these all off-season. I'll see what I can come up with tomorrow.

I thought I'd seen others pass there before? May have been WSB, but it's not a one off.

Not over that hill. Perhaps into T2 but not into T1.

Not like THAT. And not on the outside of the very outside!!!!!!! You'd have to stand right there to understand the blindness and the elevation change that makes the bike wheelie just as you need to begin braking... a gnarly combo. There is a reason everyone was freakin out when he did that, including Jorge.

If Schwantz gives Stoner an accolade for anything, then you can bet it was pretty mega - Schwantz is the original 'Stoner only walks on water 'cause he can't swim' commentator. Unbelievable bike control skills and crazy brave - absolutely.

That Cadalora pass was pretty damn nice; I don't recall the Creeek being renowned for a wide and even level of grip, nor of Doohan offering Cadalora the advantaged line anywhere, ever :D .

Take your pick. :)
I especially like Schwantz around the outside of Rainey at the Melbourne Hairpin at Donington.

My two all-time favorite races, I think, were both at Suzuka--1989 and 1991.

On a side note... Huewen and Ryder still my all-time favorite bike racing commentator pair.

I'm with wayne G.........melbourne @ Donnington............I mean, it's not like it's a back marker he was outbraking. I can't find the footage, but Schwantz at the second last turn at Salzburgring.....year after year..........turning in on the front wheel up the inside of people.

Schwantz always looked out of control....but very rarely was.

Gardner up the inside of Doohan, turn one phillip island with the fairing flapping in 92...........no one was beating Wayne those first two years.

Also Schwantz at Misano in the wet....can't remember the year ( 90 to 92 )............the others would get on the picks at the end of the short straight..........he'd wait till he was level, or past..........then brake.

As Krop pointed out..............brake men make for exciting passes/racing.

Barros on the Suzuki at Assen ( before he binned it)..........he was out braking Schwantz and Rainey............Schwantz hugn his foot out at one point to tell him to just go past......

Cam D, thanks. It is nice when you can watch a battle from many years ago and it is so good, you really care about the outcome.

Yes that period mirrored today, all factory lease bikes with no private machines. Was also in the middle of dramaticaly increasing HP and 115kg bikes led to a number of massive highsides for many riders. The FIM as it was in those days, upped the weight to 130kgs and Yamaha built the engines for the run of Harris/ROC YZR500's.

Thank's TSI........

Shwantz has many percieved faults for some people.

I am always amazed at his ability to make his own lines, that appear totally irrelevant to the laws of physics that dictate where a motorcycle should be in a turn with the speed it is carrying.

NB.......What was Schwantz's fascination with passing people around the outside ?  ..............was it just to add insult to injury ? ;)

Also, amazing the gap that Schwantz and Rainey pulled on Doohan at what was essentially a horsepower circuit, at a time ( has it ever been different ?) when Honda were the straight line horsepower/speed kings.

There was only 14 a year later! What drives me nuts when people blame Dorna for low grids and backmarkers.

Not a pass but this was my favourite moment of 1990 was watching live on Eurosport.

At least Mackenzie got a podium out of it.
