Yep, that's the one. You can't see that elevation and the blind brow from the usual TV coverage. I didn't really understand why Schwantz was so impressed by the move until I saw that video.

...and this all has what exactly to do with Ducati?

I know I sound like a broken record, but can't you make a thread where this is relevant so I don't have to wade through page after page of guff to read about what I am interested in - ie, Ducati goings on!

It's called an "aside", it is what people do in normal conversation. By all means bring the conversation back to Ducati, if you have something to add.

That is what the "New Topic" button is for.

Every thread cluttered with "aside" business at the moment and it's pretty annoying if you have limited time to catch up on news/opinions on the topic in question.

Chat to your hearts content about anything you like, I am just asking that people avoid filling topics with stuff that has no relevance.

What, you mean like filling out the GOATEE topic with arguments about Rossi's earlier career statistics?

However I agree, and suggest a new topic for '800's great races'.

As time seems to be an ongoing sort of thing, it seems somewhat of a misnomer to have as a topic heading, Greatest Of All Time Eight hundred Era.

This is clearly how some people got confused, as time does not appear to be finished just yet.

I propose that a topic to discuss the best 800cc era rider be created under a new acronym.

GROTEE......... Greastest Rider Of The Eight hundred Era.

That should avoid any confusion............. ;) :D

(muttering under breath)..... that, or two seperate topics under the headings "Casey/Valentino, let us count the ways which we love thee...." ;)

So, after the tests, does anybody know what Super Duck have outlined in regards to further improving the bike ? ( that may be me presuming that the bike has already improved ! :P ). Any more frame work/redesigns to be undertaken ?

It is such a pity that no-one can say anything complimentary about Rossi/Stoner without being branded a Rossi/Stoner lover.

Or alternately, no-one can so anything critical about Rossi/Stoner without being branded a Rossi/Stoner hater.

Some of us do follow MotoGP as a whole rather than individual riders. As we have done for many years. And will continue to do so once Rossi/Stoner retires.

PS. ...and yes Tourn46, it is off topic. Sorry about that.

AMEN !!!

I watch it as whole......... Sometimes it appears that the blatent idiolising gets in the way of any relevant ( no matter how incorrect) view or opinion.

My intention is not to brand anyone for their support of their chosen rider, but the gushing of unwavering support and justifications borders on the religiously fanatical !!............ and I can't help but shit-stir when I see it.

I just like the racing, without either of them (or their like), things would be rather dull.

now.........to (somewhat) get back to the engineering side of things, maybe Ducati could ( or are lucky to not ) have employed this bloke to solve their frame issues.

Hope it gives Tourn a laugh, and we can go back to the topic at hand.

.........An ebay ad for (what appears to be) the worlds first all purpose racing motorcycle !!!

I highlighted (and commented on) the bit's I liked from the ad...........

My request was very simple and there is nothing more to it than it's just a lot easier if we can keep things in the correct place - as I said, at the moment I have limited time to catch up on news and views. I would simply appreciate it if I could come into the Ducati thread and read about Ducati... not about a pass at Laguna Seca that didn't involve any Ducati riders.

I apologise if this causes offense. If you feel this request is out of order, then please PM me and I will discuss it there.

Re: Ducati goings on. Part 2.

Found this...........

Ducati technical chief Filippo Preziosi says the results of the first winter test proved that the team is on the right track with the major changes it has made for 2012.

After failing to win a race in 2011 - despite recruiting seven-time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi to lead its line-up - Ducati has had a total rethink of its bike concept with the GP12.

Rossi was between 0.7 and 1.2 seconds off the pace during the test at Sepang this week, in line with Ducati's hopes for the new bike's first proper run, and Preziosi said the results had vindicated the team's changes.

"You can do simulations as much as you like, but the rider's sensations, the feeling he creates with his bike, remain the only undisputable judgement," he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I was afraid that the ideas on how to solve the problems, based on data processing and riders' judgement, were wrong. We are still far behind [Casey] Stoner, but if we look at Yamaha, then we are closer."

Preziosi said clear progress had been made with areas that Rossi had struggled with in 2011.

"The problem was to allow the riders, especially Rossi, to feel the front, with regards to both contact with the surface and turn entry. That objective has been met," he said.

"Why didn't we do it before? That's racing. Honda, too, didn't have in 2009 the bike they dominated with in 2011! You try to solve the problems when they arise, but no revolutions, it's been an evolution."

And this......sorry if it seems unrelated to the topic............

Nicky Hayden's body has been letting him down and hindering his test participation in anticipation of the 2012 MotoGP season.

Hayden took minimal laps at the helm of the Ducati GP12 during the three-day test at Sepang International Circuit this past week.

Lacking strength to ride well, Hayden traveled directly from Malaysia to Fremont, California where he received a thorough examination at Dr Arthur Ting's clinic.

There, tests revealed damage to cartilage in the Kentucky Kid's shoulder, as well as to muscles in his back.

On Monday, the Ducati Team rider will undergo an operation in order to have his condition evaluated more thoroughly--and to treat his ongoing injuries. The injuries stem back to his fall near his Owensboro, KY home on December 27, where he broke his left scapula and fractured two ribs while training at a private indoor flat track facility. At the time, Hayden was riding a motorcycle for the first time since breaking his scaffold during the season finale at Valencia, November 6.

"Of course another operation before the season is never a good thing but I'm actually happy that I tried to ride at Malaysia, because it helped me discover that the problem with the shoulder was bigger than we thought," Hayden said. After seeing the scans, it was clear why I couldn't ride well. Setbacks are a part of life and a part of MotoGP so we'll deal with it and do everything possible to get back on the bike in good condition as soon as possible. Ducati and the team are putting maximum effort into this championship and that helps me to keep my spirits high and to be confident heading into the season."

Interesting comment from Preziosi about the last years bike - "I think that Hector is quite happy with his bike and there is further potential with that bike, before thinking about changing it"

“We have developed the Valencia bike for the satellite teams, based on the same analysis and results from that test. So we have brought some special parts [to Sepang] for the satellite bikes,” said Preziosi. “Hector is very happy about his new bike and is the top satellite rider.

“The electronics are already the same [as the factory bikes],” Preziosi added. “All the engineers can make different electronic choices. Which they think is better for their rider. But the system is the same.”

Looking ahead to the start of the racing season, Preziosi explained that proven mechanical parts will be made available from the factory team, should Pramac and Cardion AB want them.

“Our strategy is to develop new things for the factory team and when it is proven that the reliability is good and development is quite stable then we will offer them to the satellite teams,” he said.

“It depends on time, money and performance if they decide [they want them]. But I think that Hector is quite happy with his bike and there is further potential with that bike, before thinking about changing it.”

I think that makes sense, even that GPZero (or whatever we're calling it thse days) was quite a radical deviation from the GP11/11.x so I would assume that there is hidden potential in there, just as there is with the GP12 that Valentino and Nicky have.

Well, to strike off in the same civil vein as you have,

If you read the whole post, I was trying to poke fun at what I see to be a great topic, probably started in good faith, but since then, used as yet another topic with which to continue the everlasting, innane "Stoner v Rossi" argument.

In an attempt to derail this, for my own selfish reasons ( and possibly sanity), I decided to let go with a bit of irrelevance.

Seeing as the 800's are done and dusted, and Stoner has the numbers on the board to make this a two, to maybe four reply argument on the GOATEE subject........ I found myself thinking, why can't I have my own little bit of fun ? :D

Seems people who function like the lowest common denomenator, popularist media only quote things, usually out of context, to serve their own arguments.

Nice to meet you too, ........hope I do better on my next attempt, so as to gain your approval.

PS.........I don't know if you noticed, but this topic is about Ducati, and their attempts to make a decent bike. Not the GOATEE topic, so I felt within my rights to take some poetic licence to the mention of such (re, goatee).

Brad was mentioning his wish (and subsequent achievement there-of) to start another topic, called Goatee........so poor reference there...........try again. ;)

it looks very likely that Hector Barberà will test the Ducati GP12 next week at Jerez, in place of the injured Nicky Hayden. The test team will be in action with Franco Battaini, but they need a regular race rider to evaluate some new components,
GP One

They needed a second rider so he can get a decent tow... :P  Seriously though, I guess Valentino is still recovering and Checa is getting into the SBK season... only really leaves Hector as the next best thing. Hayden and Rossi would be up to speed with the direction Ducati are trying to go and would have a good reference from riding earlier attempts. Hector's bloody quick, but Ducati must be a disappointed not to have one of their top men riding the bike.

Sounds like things will still be crap at Ducati. http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/sport/sportresults/MotoGP/2012/February/feb2912-rossi-faces-wait-for-ducati-improvements/
Rossi though was clearly hoping for some new parts to arrive for the final test in Jerez next month or at the latest by the first race in Qatar on April 8. Meetings today though in Malaysia with Ducati technical guru Filippo Preziosi confirmed to Rossi that updates will arrive at a later date than he'd hoped.
The 33-year-old told MCN: “Today I spoke with Filippo and unfortunately we need more time. From now until Qatar we have a programme of different stuff that we have ready but then the next new stuff will be ready after Portugal or Le Mans. It will be one new step of the bike and important development. But this will be after the first three or four races."

Interesting analysis in last weeks MCN suggesting that the GP12 is a 925cc. This analysis is based on various reports of track-side analysis suggesting the Ducs were running at 18k+ RPM, the fact that shots of the bikes LCD show a 19k rev ceiling and then extrapolating from that using the generally accepted engineering rule that the max accepted sustainable piston speed is 27 metres a sec, and then the generally accepted bore and stroke. I can dig out the article and quote some of the mathematical specifics if anyone really wants.

Anyway the article itself was very upbeat with JB sounding very bullish about the bikes chances. That was after Sepang I. Other interesting things noted was that during Sepang I they had progressively shortened the swing-arm length till they ran out of adjustment and they had used padding on the tank to push Rossi furher back to try and further improve the rear grip
