2012 Misano WSBK Superpole: Declared Wet
It had to happen; Rain came to Misano. While the rain had finished by the time Superpole started, it was declared a wet Superpole, which gives us two twenty-minute sessions instead of the three shorter ones we would get with a dry session.
Part of the track was still damp, but the sun was drying it out quickly, and some riders decided to wait until later in the session before heading out. This gamble proved to be a mistake for Carlos Checa who ran out of time before being able to set a time to qualify for Superpole 2 and will start from 16th.
With championship contenders Max Biaggi and Marco Melandri also not qualifying for Superpole 2, this will make for an interesting race.
Superpole two started out with Tom Sykes posting the fastest time of the weekend very early on. The only person able to get even close to his pole position lap was Sykes himself, when he got within two tenths of his previous lap. This will be his fifth pole position of the year. Jonathan Rea was the only other rider to get a 1'35 lap.

Choices?
Seems that the only thing as odd as Checa's falling off this year has been the choices that haven't paid off. The terrible tire choice race now this QP starting from 16th. Watching with 10 minutes left and looks like Sykes put his work in and has pole by a bit.
Sounds like grid for
great races.
Was it waiting too late, or coming in too early?
It looked like Carlos Checa was out there in plenty of time and setting fast times, but he came in inexplicably with only a couple of minutes to go (too late to change a tire, or even get back up to speed on the existing tire). If I recall correctly, he had set two fastest sectors, then came in.
Carlos was very upset afterwards, but who can he blame but himself? Rapidly improving track, times dropping every minute... of course you need to stay out!
Cock up
I'll explain the Althea cock up in my daily round-up, shortly.
