2012 Phillip Island Moto2 Qualifying Practice Result: Rain Splits Session, Pole Settled Early

Results and summary of qualifying for the Moto2 class at Phillip Island:

Pol Espargaro has taken his seventh pole position of the season, in a session split in half by the rain. Espargaro's dominance of practice, challenged only by Scott Redding on Saturday morning, continued in the afternoon, the Spaniard taking the lead early and setting a lap fast enough in the first half of practice to go unchallenged once the brief shower moved off again with some 10 minutes to go.

Scott Redding will start from 2nd on the grid, the young Englishman the best of the rest and his extra weight less of a problem at the flowing Australian circuit. Redding qualified ahead of Marc Marquez, the championship leader some seven tenths slower than Espargaro, but content to start from the first row and concentrate on securing the two points he needs to clinch the 2012 Moto2 title.

Tom Luthi heads up the second row, fractionally ahead of Takaaki Nakagami in 5th and Randy Krummenacher - who is without a ride for 2013 at the moment - in 6th. Johann Zarco ended the session in 7th, and will start from the third row of the grid, the Frenchman frustrated by the conditions as he was on a charge when the session was interrupted by the rain. Andrea Iannone took 8th, a second off the pace of Espargaro and just a few hundredths ahead of Ant West. West was disappointed not to have qualified better, the Australian suffering a crash in the final minutes of qualifying, putting an end to his attempts to improve his grid position, though West came away unhurt. Alex De Angelis, the winner of the last two Moto2 races in Australia, was less lucky: the NGM Forward rider went down and hit his hand hard, standing up holding his left hand. No news of any injury yet, but a hand injury at Phillip Island will put paid to any ambitions of making it three in a row he may have, especially as he will now have to start from 22nd.
