Tito Rabat set the fastest-ever Moto2 lap at the Losail Circuit -- 2'00.081 -- and in doing so secured the pole position in Saturday's crash-marred qualifying session. Sandro Cortese managed to claim second but crashed hard at session's end, his bike taking out at least one other rider, Mika Kallio. Cortese's and Kallio's condition weren't immediately known and will be updated here.

UPDATE: Both riders were taken to the medical center and have been cleared to ride Sunday.

Takaaka Nakagami, at three-tenths back, secured the final spot on the front row.

Thomas Luthi heads up the second row followed by Sam Lowes who trails Luthi only by eight-thousandths of a second. Mika Kallio qualified on the row's final slot. It was on his final lap as qualifying ended that he hit Cortese's bike which had ended up in the middle of the track after Cortese's crash moments earlier. Kallio's bike sustained massive front-end damage in the crash.

Up-side-down

In a certain way it's a pity we have to start the season on a a-typical circuit like Quatar.

Also in Moto2 we have some weird phenomena: guys like Nico Terol and Jordi Torres who won races last year are now way down the order with more than a second behind the leader.

We're closing in on the moment of truth: the actual racing. Let's see tomorrow around the same time how the situation is.

Shame to see Josh Herrin struggle so much. Anyone want to lay wager on who gets on a world championship level podium first, Josh Herrin or PJ Jacobsen?
